So a few months back I saw this video on some random blog and it was talking about what a commotion this particular ad had stirred.  Now first of all it’s P.E.T.A. so everything they do seem to have to be controversial in some way and even though they mean well with their cause I feel most of the time they are extremely misguided, but that’s a whole other story. Anyways, so the controversy over this ad is that many people feel that it promotes violence against women.   Really?!

Let’s take a good look at this.  The “concept” of the ad is that vegans make better lovers and while yes it is extremely exaggerated it is clearly in my opinion meant all in good fun.  The narrator tells us how the woman’s boyfriend in the video went vegan and can now “bring it like a tantric porn star”.  What exactly is wrong with that? They then show a flashback of sorts to their earlier escapades and the look on the woman’s face clearly shows she is enjoying it.  Then as she is returning home from buying more veggies, her boyfriend is fixing the hole in the wall. I don’t know about you but I would rather take a stroll to the store than have to spackle. He then turns and asked her with obvious concern about her well being and her response is to toss him the bag of veggies and then moves towards him with a devious look on her face.  I’m pretty good at reading body language, or maybe I just have a very active imagination, so from what I observed from her response was that it pretty much said “I’m going to go ice my neck for a minute while you eat these veggies and then we’re going for round two”.

In no way, shape, or form do I feel that this promotes violence towards women.  It is as I stated earlier, an exaggeration.  Some of the comments that were posted on YouTube about the video were along the lines of yes it’s good to be able to have great sex but it shouldn’t be “painful or cause injury”.  Well I don’t know about you but I myself as a woman who enjoys rough sex from time to time actually likes it because it can be a little painful at moments.  That good kind of pain is what makes it exciting.  Now I wouldn’t want to have to wear a neck brace after it and you should always be mindful of not causing you partner serious injury, but let’s face it sometimes rug burn or a sore back do happen. Personally I don’t mind a few battle scars so to speak, they can be a fun reminder of an amazing encounter.

As for the negative comments about the ad, they are actually what I find offensive.  I wouldn’t call myself a feminist per se but I’m definitely an alpha female who happens to be very sexually liberated and I like to celebrate that. Why is it that every time a woman seems to be enjoying herself sexually society has to have something negative to say about it especially when the subject matter is outside the realm of vanilla?  I highly doubt that if the roles were reversed in this video and the guy was the one walking around with a neck brace that it would cause as much controversy.  Most of society would be giving him a high five but if it’s a woman it’s comes across in a negative light and totally misunderstood.

Here’s a rather silly, yet cute commercial from Internationally famous IKEA that came out somewhere in Europe last year. It makes us smile to see kink used in such a playful way and we can’t help but wonder if this commercial would ever be aired in America? I’m sure it’s no news flash that Europeans tend to be way more comfortable with sexuality than Americans, but even a commercial as harmless as this is bound to be totally controversial and down right ridiculed in the USA.

It’s comforting to see that kink is becoming more and more mainstream everyday and hopefully it will inspire everyone, including Americans, to explore their sexualities more.

DD: What do you like most about the kink scene?  Dislikes?
MP: My favorite thing about the kink scene is that it is so open. I am firm believer that you never know what you like until you’ve tried it.  There are infinite ways to experiment with sexuality and once you find that kink that works for you, it takes your sex life from great to phenomenal. You can explore and straddle the line between pain and pleasure and when you find that perfect balance, you’ll wonder why its taken so long to discover it.

As far as dislikes I’d have to say that I dislike the fact that kink is as taboo as it is. People like to think that they are open minded, but some people are quick to judge if they have never explored it for themselves.

DD: What is your regular day like?  Hobbies/interests?
MP: A regular day always starts with having Greek yogurt and a nice cup of coffee for breakfast I go to work at the Museum of Sex and spend most my day organizing and planning events. After work, I go to the boxing gym and relieve some pent up energy. I usually like to unwind with a nice glass of Pinot Noir and candlelight while I prepare for the next day.

DD: Tell us about your work at the Museum of Sex.
MP: I am currently the Administrative Assistant and Events Coordinator at the Museum of Sex so I keep busy

DD: Has working at the Museum of Sex impacted your personal sexuality?
MP: I have always been open about my sexuality and working at the Museum of Sex has really given more resources to explore it further. Whenever I’m on my lunch break, I find myself wandering around our gift shop checking out the new items and get new ideas to spice up my sex life. I also get to meet so many new people that it reminda me that sex is so much more complex than I ever thought imaginable.

DD: What do you like most about working there?
MP: I enjoy the fact that I get to put together some kick ass events! I can use my creativity to give our guests the over the top experience they expect. It is also incredible that I get to work with such open-minded groups, people that have dedicated their careers to helping facilitate conversations about sex in an educational and professional manner.

Its also great that I can open NSFW (Not Safe For Work) emails and not worry about my boss judging me

DD: Tell us about your alter ego Ms. Perez?
MP: Ms. Perez… What can I say about her? She is a powerful woman that doesn’t take no for an answer… and reminds women that they can be sexy as long as they choose to be. She owns every space she enters whether she’s hosting a show for 60 people or simply entertaining her partner. She’s a fun and sexy domme that likes to make you think that you are in control, but reminds you who’s the boss with a snap of her finger.

DD: Ms. Perez hosts events at the Nuyorican Poets Cafe and an Open Mic Night at the Museum of Sex.  What can the audience expect at these events?
MP: Yes, Ms. Perez curates and hosts the Museum of Sex’s Wide Wide Open Wednesday every first Wednesday of the month and erotic open Mic at the Nuyorican Poets Cafe once a month. All of the shows that Ms. Perez hosts are all very audience oriented and relies on high energy and are an overall good time. Whether you are a performer or spectator, everyone is encouraged to let go and interact with one another in a sort of family environment.

Memoirs of Payne ~ The “fast” 10 year old

I was fifteen when I first had sex, but I always knew that I would lose my virginity before I finished high school. Even before I knew what sex was, I knew I wanted to be doing it.

One time, when I was 10yrs old, I was playing dolls with my best friend Lauren, who happened to be a Mormon and who also happened to teach me what sex really was. I was completely shocked and slightly disappointed when I found out how sex really worked. My young mind thought it had something to do with hurting other people, due to the sounds the man and woman would be making during a sex scene in a movie. They would be grunting and moaning while their faces became twisted in, what I thought was, agony. It always amazed me how somehow the pain they were feeling was a good thing, if you were with the right person.

So once I asked Lauren how old she wanted to be when she had sex for the first time. “I’m not having sex until I get married of course.” She replied.

Wow, this answer never even occurred to me!

“What about you?” Lauren asked.

“16.” I answered

“16?! Why 16?” she asked me half disgusted and half excited.

But I didn’t know why I chose 16. Maybe it was because that’s when it seemed like all the teenagers were doing it in the movies and TV shows I watched as a kid. I always liked the “fast” women in those shows, the slutty girls that no one understood. When all my girlfriends in the neighborhood would get together and watch “Grease,” we’d pick which characters each of us would play along with the film. I always had to play the “goodie two shoes” Sandy because I was blonde, but who I really wanted to play was the naughty and tough brunette “Rizzo.”

All I knew at 10 years old was if I was going to find someone by sixteen to experience this painful thing called sex, I was going to be the one in control of making it happen. There was no way I would let any boy hurt me, I was going to hurt them first. If that made me a slut, so be it.

It’s funny how that first exposure to sex had stayed with me for so much of my life.
